Manufacturer Description
The Pumpkin Seed is the Swiss army knife of surfboards. It blends design elements of a fish with the performance characteristics of a pin tail resulting in maximum versatility. From small, gutless surf to high speed tube riding, this board can handle it all. The wide contemporary nose and relaxed rocker make this board paddle fast and accelerate out of the hole like a jack rabbit on roids. The single to double concave bottom and dynamic rail profile further complement the rail to rail performance and versatility. Essential for any quiver. Team tested and approved. Available in a variety of sizes to accommodate a broad range of rider weights and abilities.

Great for beginners as the longer varieties are basically fun boards in terms of volume. The shorter varieties are great small/weak wave boards for intermediate to advanced surfers. In good waves, the advantages of paddling and speed over flat sections are outweighed by disadvantages of poor responsiveness when going fast, in my experience. In bigger waves (double overhead barreling mexican beachbreak) it was a nuisance, but not completely unridable. For reference, I have a 5'10" thruster I got in 2009, and have ridden it regularly in all conditions for 6 years now, and it's still lightweight/watertight. I weigh 150 lbs., and sometimes wish I got the 5'8" model. My judgement is that it makes a good "swiss army board" like the description says, though is in no way a replacement for a standard shortboard in better waves. In terms of small waves, it is outclassed by modern 'groveler' designs, but still is plenty fun. At the time it came out, it was certainly a breakthrough design.

Awesome board, handles waves anywhere from knee-high up to well overhead. Transitions from top to bottom fast and has enough floatation to get you over the flat sections in smaller surf. If I had to have just one board I would definitely pick this one. Great for all skill levels and one of the funnest boards i've ever ridden.

This has been my all-around short board for the past 3 years, and I've enjoyed it in all kind of conditions, from waist high to overhead. I do find it is a bit unresponsive, but that's probably the tradeoff you make for so much volume. Overall though, I'm happy with it.

Great hybrid design. Got a used 6'6" PU round tail version shaped by Doug and it is now my favorite board. Enough foam up front to get into waves easily but super maneuverable and can still duck dive it. Haven't had it in anything much over head high, but it is my go-to for anything from 2-8 ft.

Can't really paddle it or catch waves, but it also feels really unstable under me.

This is good all around hybrid board. I would buy it again. It's probably best rode as quad. I rode it 6.4 quad at 180lb. I used it from 1 ft summer mush to 8-10ft SF OB. Broke it in half at 2 ft beach break. Pros: Tons of speed, durable, easy to paddle, catches every ripple, comes with fins and bag. Cons: Hard to duck dive, not super responsive, very sharp fins :).

I'm about 210 and needed to up my wave count. I test drove (rented) a 7'0" pumpkin seed at Pleasure Point in Santa Cruz and then had to have one. I can duck dive without trouble yet it gets me into waves more easily than my 6'8" Rusty Terminator. Mine has 5 fin boxes which makes it flexible. The Pumpkin Seed is now my go-to board.

Great beginner board for someone transitioning to a shortboard (I still don't get why this isn't on the beginner end of the difficulty range). The extra width and rounded nose provide great stability while maintaining good maneuverability. Easily my favorite board.
