Learn the S Stroke and Catch Everything

surfing paddle tipsSwimmers use a technique called the S Stroke to swim faster.  You can apply the same technique to surfing.  When you learn to paddle on your surfboard comfortably while remaining stable and balanced it might be a good time to practice using this new technique.

Instead of using your arms to push the water through in a straight line, try paddling your hands in the shape of a “S.”

1.      Slightly cup your hands with fingers slightly spread and slice your hands in the water thumb first.

2.      As you start your motion in the water, pull outwards

3.      Pull in for the second part of the stroke

4.      Pull out again for the last part of the stroke

This motion resembles an “S” or a zigzag.  This is a more efficient form of paddling because you’re incorporating different muscle into the stroke so it will help you conserve energy.  This method will also direct water toward your fins, helping you glide through the water faster.
